Can I just say that I can hardly stand it right now as I write this, the very first imanimama product review and giveaway, because it is something very near and dear to my heart. Food.
More specifically, dessert.
I work in downtown Pittsburgh, about 5 steps from the heart of the cultural district. It's a pretty cool place to be, but until fairly recently, our lunch and snack options have been limited to the same old chains day in and day out. For some unknown (and yet GLORIOUS) reason, a whole crop of new yums has begun popping up in our area. First it was Dozen Bake Shop. Unusual and tasty cupcake flavors, but many of the items are overpriced if you ask this mama. Then there was Pittsburgh Popcorn Company. NOW you're talkin'. It's pricier than popping your own in the office nuker, but you can't beat the flavors: buffalo wing, salt & vinegar, bacon cheddar, and just forGET about the dessert flavors. They're very generous with their samplings too, so you can make sure you're making the right commitment for the day.
But then something very intriguing happened next to Pittsburgh Popcorn. A sign went up on the door: Sweetlix Tart Frozen Yogurt. Coming soon. There was a website listed too, so I began my stalking.
And I waited.
Finally, the grand opening, and I was sure to be there the very first day. The manager, Jarad, who is just about the friendliest guy around, generously served up a sample of each flavor: original tart (which is available every day) and pomegranate (one of several flavors they rotate through every day or two). Both were ridiculously delicious, but I opted for the tart and my friend Sarah chose the pomegranate. I think we may have been a little annoying and over-the-top that first visit as we moaned through our dessert (mine was topped with granola, strawberries and Oreos, oh my!).
Wait, did I say dessert? Actually, I confess that neither of us had actually eaten lunch yet.
Anyway, as we left, we quickly made a sister pact to visit Sweetlix every Monday and then also Fridays on weeks that were particularly tough (we were just begging for an excuse to go back). We stuck to our agreement, and started recruiting our friends from work. Eventually, I began receiving "work" appointment requests in Outlook for Sweetlix runs. And now, I think I can officially be considered a groupie.
So now that you know the back story, let me tell you about mama's favorite lunchtime stop. It's located on Liberty Avenue, just a block or two up from Wood Street Station. When you walk in, you'll most likely be greeted by either Jarad or Odana (or on really good days — like today — both). These folks are so stinkin' friendly, you feel like you're walking into Cheers.
Check out the daily flavors. Original tart will always be an option. Some people say it's kind of like Greek yogurt. I'm not sure if I agree with that, but I can say that I regularly choose it over the other flavors (which are yummier than they ought to be). It's just that good. But the daily flavors are pretty amazing too. Always make sure to try a sample because you just never know when one will become your favorite. I've tried pomegranate (pretty good), cookies & cream (stop the presses...this one made me forsake my beloved original tart), cheesecake (my hubs' personal favorite), and today I tried...
...chocolate. At first I couldn't placed the familiarity of it, but Odana quickly solved the mystery. It's like a Fudgsicle soft serve. And yes, it's as good as it sounds.
Let me be clear, Jarad forced me to eat a bowl of the yogurt today. And he forced me to add toppings. You know, for photos. So I reluctantly got some vanilla wafers and strawberries.
And I would love to be witty and self-deprecating and say that my hips started spreading and I went up a dress size and blah blah blah, but here is one of the best things about this fro-yo: it's fat-free and a 1/2 cup serving is only 90 calories! You could go nutso on the toppings. I mean there ARE Oreos and Fruity Pebbles and brownie bites. But you could just as easily opt for fresh blackberries, kiwi or almonds.
Every flavor also contains live and active cultures. You know, the kind you always hear about that helps make tummies happy? Forget about calling this dessert...as far as this mama is concerned, it's practically a health superfood!
Prices are very reasonable for what you're getting. Smalls start at $2.50 for the original tart and are just the right amount of frozen goodness. Add another 50¢ for the flavor of the day. I also read that you can twist the flavors, though I haven't tried that yet. For another $1.45 you can get up to 3 toppings and seriously, there are SO many different options, you could eat there every day for the rest of your life and still have untasted topping combinations (statisticians, don't try to prove me wrong here, just go with it). I ate a medium once and it was good for a serious nosh, but frankly, it's a lot for me to eat regulary. And I'm an eater. And a large, as far as I'm concerned, may as well come with a lid and a label in a freezer-proof container.
Not trying to disparage you from getting the large. By all means, go for it. I'm just trying to say they aren't skimping on the sizes.
Getting hungry yet? Well then I have some very very good news for you. At least if you live in Pittsburgh.
